Using Kubuntu 7.04 When I attached my camera via usb a window came with one
of the options being to let digiKam download the pictures. I let digiKam
download from the camera and now every time I attach a usb device digikam
automatically starts up. How can I turn this behavior off?

The stuff on this page may be outdated, in which case you could maybe
find some of the files it talks about on your computer and undo
whatever it may have done:

I have digiKam as well and looked all through the settings and saw
nothing to control the behavior you're seeing. Hopefully the above page
will help you close in on it. (:

Thanks for the link. I looked through it and tried the files it mentions
with no luck. :-( I'm sure it's as simple as an entry in a config file if
I only knew which/where. I thought I had a lead with /etc/hotplug/usb, but
it only contains files for my usb mouse.

Answering my own question (maybe?). I used System Settings > Notifications
Unmounted Removable Medium
and toggled Auto Action off

We'll see, but this appeared to stop the auto Digikam starting.

I also toggled all the other Digikam Medium types on and back off just to
reset everything for good measure. Shotgun approach. :-)

Glad to hear it! I have yet to dig up my camera and see if it will play
nice for me since I have a USB external CD-RW Drive and if Digicam were
to come up when that got plugged in after I plugged in my camera, I

Heh, if it works, it's good! Will your system still autodetect when you
plug in USB devices now?

Good news and bad. I had to go back and turn on:

"Unmounted Removable Medium > Open in New Window (Auto Action)"

Evidently resetting all the Digikam entries was the answer or turning off
Unmounted Removable Medium and then back on. I hate it when a problem
clears up and I'm not sure which one of several actions was the good one.
All I know for sure is fooling around with System Settings > Notifications
Post by Little Girl
Storage Media Notifications fixed the problem. Now my USB flash drives
auto open and my phone auto opens if I have it set for Storage Media, but
my camera requires a manual download. Just what I wanted. Next time I'll
be a little more scientific in my approach.

I figured you might have to reset the auto-detection somehow.

I tried just now to plug in my old Intel camera to see if I could
duplicate the problem but Kubuntu doesn't seem to like that model -
not one little bit <g>. I have a more modern camera packed away. I'll
see if I can dig that out and hook it up. (:

That's a completely different type of camera than LG was talking 'bout, but
it is fun that it works. Since you have Kopete using it for MSN, you can
also get it working with Yahoo!, too. All you need to do is install Jasper.

I wasn't able to find what I needed in the distros, so I downloaded and
compiled it myself. After install, Kopete and the webcam Just Work over
Yahoo!. It was very cool.

Jasper project:

Download and make the jasper executable, then put it somewhere in your
path. Then enjoy Yahoo! video conferencing goodness. :)

The one I originally tried was an Intel Create & Share - a really old
camera. Last night I hunted down my Logitech ClickSmart 510 and tried
it. No go, but the batteries are dead. It gets power from the USB, and
showed a display in the little LED window, but I have a feeling it has
to have batteries to "do its thing" while hooked to the computer. It's
on the Ubuntu Hardware List as being supported, so as soon as I can get
some batteries (of course it uses triple A batteries when all I happen
to have on hand is a 9 volt <g>), it should run. If not, I'll use the
EasyCam software Ubuntu mentions to get it set up. Once I've got it up
and running, I'll see if digiKam plays nice with it or not. (:

Like you, after reading this thread, I too hunted down my old Intel
CS630. Also like you, I found the batteries too low. After charging
them, I tried to see what would happen if I hooked it up to this Ubuntu
6.06 box. I used a spare USB cable.

Nothing happened. The camera was not even powered up from the USB
connection.

I do use this PC for both the Nikon Coolpix L6 and the HP Photosmart
M627, and I do use digiKam and several other programs which can all find
and download the images from these newer cameras.

So I fired up another Ubuntu 6.06 box, the one that also has Win XP Pro,
where I used to download the camera, and where the original USB cable is
located.

The camera was powered up by the USB connection and found, but there was
an error when trying to download the one-and-only image. I tried digiKam
too, but received the same error.

I thought about using a third box which has Ubuntu 7.04 installed, but I
didn't want to crawl around on the floor to hook up a USB cable.

I may try using a powered USB hub on the first PC and see if the camera
wakes up.

Please let me know if you find a method to download from the Intel CS630
into anything Linux.

I pulled out my Create & Share again and mine is a <blush> CS330 so
it's a lot older than yours. It doesn't even use batteries - it must be
hooked up to the computer to run. The Logitech ClickSmart 510 is the
one that needs batteries, and I could swear I had to have batteries in
it to transfer files off of it even though the USB does bring up a
display on it.

This may not mean anything. I'm kind of surprised my Logitech camera
had any kind of electrical response to being plugged in.

There may be a way <g>. This is the single most referenced page when it
comes to either of our cameras:

http://spca50x.sourceforge.net/spca50x.php

I'm not sure if this is related directly to that one or a different
product entirely, but it's also for the same kinds of cameras. And this
is the only place my CS330 is listed, although the driver is outdated
for mine:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/spca50x/

This is where to get the drivers discussed in the most referenced
page. At the bottom of the page is a link to a list of supported
devices. Things look good for both of us on this list, although my
CS330 is no longer on the current list:

http://mxhaard.free.fr/download.html

And this guy has an interesting perspective on using USB cameras the
way USB storage devices are used, which could work for at least getting
pictures off of a camera:

http://www.hackorama.com/pages/usb.shtml

I've got all of these bookmarked for a rainy day. I have yet to get the
batteries so I can try all this properly. (:
