Would someone please tell me in what package(s) I might find a simulated
radar display screen saver for the Gnome desktop on Ubuntu 10.04?

I'd also like to ask how one just locks the input devices (mouse and
keyboard) so that I can leave videos playing for others to watch, yet any
input attempt will prompt for a password.

Thank you.

There is one called 'sonar' for xscreensaver. It's in xscreensaver-data-
extra. Looks more like radar to me.

Yes, that's the one I was searching for, thank you. It is indeed radar,
and the "sonar" title reminds me of the fellow who ordered the "fresh
fruit salad" in the restaurant. The bowl of canned fruit cocktail bore no
resemblance to anything fresh, and when he complained to the waitress
about it, she replied "Oh, that's just what they _call_ it!"

It's all in 'man sonar'.

Ok and thanks (it's not 'that' important). ;-)

May I ask please how one would supply the "-no-dns -no-times" and other
options to the sonar xscreensvaer?

Try, System > Preferences > Screensaver... Select Sonar on the left and
click the 'Advanced' button. A 'command line' edit box is available.

Thanks, but there is no "Advanced" button available in my Ubuntu 10.04
sonar screensaver preferences dialog after selecting the Sonar
screensaver ... or before.

Not sure why mine is different from yours.

It sounds like a difference between GNOME's screensaver and
xscreensaver. Xscreensaver is by far the better product and much more
feature-full. I can't understand Ubuntu's decision to include
gnome-screensaver instead.

Thnks for that "heads-up". xscreensaver is now installed and the options
I want are now easily configured as previously recommended.

Have you installed xscreensaver or are you stuck with gnome-screensaver?

If you have xscreensaver, run xscreensaver-demo,
click on "sonar",
click on "Settings",
click on "Advanced",
enter options to "Command line"

xscreensaver
xscreensaver-data contains a sonar which is probably a radar ..

It doesnt allow you to play videos with a locked machine however as
requested.

I am sure there must be a solution for somewhere. God knows mplayer has
everything else!

Could it be as easy as an entry in .xscreensaver, and a symlink to mplayer
in /usr/lib/xscreensaver.

The "xtrlock" package is the solution. While it doesn't prompt for the
password, it locks keyboard* and mouse input (*until after the password
is typed).

While it's not a screensaver option, I created a Gnome launcher in a
desktop panel that lets me just click and the videos display as normal
while the input devices are locked until the correct password is entered.
