The one Windows ap I cannot live without is a little one that saves
phrases of indefinite length and lets you insert one you select by
clicking on one of an indefinite number of buttons.

And it works with any application!

Is there something like that for Linux?

Thanks.

If I search for the string typeitin with the string linux, I find this
blog/forum article
http://lifehacker.com/software/text-substitution/ask-the-readers-how-do-you-use-text-expansion-251810.php#c1284390
Ask the Readers: How do you use text expansion? We love time-saving
text substitution apps here at Lifehacker. Whether you're using Texter
on Windows, TextExpander on the Mac, Snippits on Linux, or some other
tool, you can save oodles of time by letting the program do your
repetitive typing for you.

... and in that article TypeItIn is mentioned along with a lot of other
such text expanders.

One of the respondents mentioned using a snippits script in linux and
provided a link
http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Snippits?content=52197 This is
Ruby program that will type text for you. It uses 'snippits', small text
files with a simple syntax to determine what to type. However, snippits
can be very powerful, since they can contain embedded ruby, special keys
(Control, Shift, Up, etc), and can contain a cursor placement
instruction.

You can also search on the string linux and 'text expansion' or similar
strings or combined strings.

BTW, typeitin is not free but shareware and wants a $20 registration fee

Not the phrase I (or the author) would use to describe TypeItIn!

I downloaded that and will see if it performs as I need.
