Discussion:
Web Cameras That Work With Skype For Linux Out Of The Box
(too old to reply)

I am using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, 64-bit.

I just installed the Snapcraft version of Skype for Linux on my desktop
PC. The PC does not have a camera, so I would like to purchase one
that _works out of the box with Linux_ and is readily available in the
USA.

Does anyone have a recommendation?

PS - I found the following information:
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SkypeWebCams> appears to be old info;
<http://www.ideasonboard.org/uvc/> not sure how old the info is

Again, I would like to stress that I am looking for a webcam that works
out of the box. No webcam that require esoteric tweakings, please!

Also, I understand that Google is my friend. I can find webcams that
are advertized as working with Linux! But the question is how much
work do they require to make them work properly?

I don't know how they could build a webcam that does not
work with Linux. Apparently though some makers can make it difficult.

This 1st URL contains lists of cameras that are
problematic and those that are less so.
<http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Webcam-HOWTO/hardware.html>

This 2nd URL contains instructions.

Google is not my friend but DuckDuckGo is my pal.

Any/all of them. They all work. Perfectly.

I wouldn't spend the $20 on the webcam just yet.

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/microsoft-prohibits-offensive-language-skype,36742.html

"Microsoft clarified some of the issues for us and said that

"Microsoft agents do not watch or listen to your Skype call."

However, the company didn't clarify whether or not software or machine
learning algorithms are used to monitor Skype calls or other services in
real-time for Service Agreement violations."

"Don't publicly display or use the Services to share inappropriate content
or material (involving, for example, nudity, bestiality, pornography,
offensive language, graphic violence, or criminal activity)."

So that means a Skype phone call goes something like this.

"Nice weather we're having."

"Yeah, nice."

"Good talking to you"

"OK, Bye"

While a room filled with a thousand NVidia video cards, run your
conversation through classifiers, looking for hidden meaning.

I can see the new "central server" model for Skype is paying off.

This is specifically about Xbox live and the (group) chats on it.
