Just installed external fingerprint readers for my Xubuntu 24.04 desktop
and laptop, using fprintd driver. When " sudo pam-auth-update " was
entered into terminal an ncurses gui came up, I couldn't figure out how to
select (add a star to) the fingerprint authentication line entry, so
instead used the command " pam-auth-update --enable fprintd ". I would
like to know how to select or deselect an item anyway. Tried every key,
didn't work. Pressing "enter" just closed the ncurses gui without
selecting the item. Anyone know how?

Up/down arrow keys to highlight the relevant box, then space bar to
select/deselect works for me. That's with Linux Mint 20, based on
Ubuntu 20.04, so older than your version but I wouldn't expect something
like this to have changed that much.

Space bar worked, thanks. Probably the only key I didn't try
