Thanks for the detailed reply which I am trying to follow with my limited
recollection of Linux structure. The trouble with a system that always
works is that one forgets the details of operation when it finally fails.

You might wish to take some notes as I have found that one will probably
need them in a few months time. Good insurance if you like.
