Discussion:
reading an .mht file
(too old to reply)

.mht files are created by some accountancy programs (over which I have no
control) and consist of some kind of encoded html
Firefox has plugins to _create_ .mht files, but not to read them (as far as I
have found)

Other than transferring such a file to a wintel (spit, cough) machine where it
can be read by IE does anyone have a pointer to a Ubuntu application that will
do the job?

The Mozilla Archive Format File extension opens and writes them. It also
lets you use an alternative MAFF format which is a zip file and is not a
flat file (grumble, curse, shake fists, repeat).

Apologies for replying to my own mail.

Installed the (standard, not beta) version.
Then, extracting the .mht file from the email, and opening it in Firefox gave me
(a lot) of what looks like MIME text.

No cigar.

Tried kmhtconvert:
To use it I have to extract the .mht file from the mail, run kmhtconvert which
creates a directory in which are .html files, which I can then view. It works,
but seems a bit roundabout. Being lazy I am looking for something more in the
point-and-click line...

Thanks anyway,

Hi

There's a Firefox extension called Mozilla Archive Format which will
happily read MHT files. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/212

I suspect this is the same add-on thats at maf.mozdef.org. What the blurb says
is that it can _save_ html pages as archives, Unfortunately it does not seem to
be able to open pages archived on wintel (obligatory: hack, spit) PCs.

Synaptic is easier, it only shows kmhtconvert

apt-cache search gives me:

kmhtconvert
libgtkxmhtml-dev
libgtkxmhtml1
xmhtml1
xmhtml1-dev

I know nothing about mht files, but I read your response to Florian,
and I have a question. Why don't you make a script to extract the
.mht file from the mail, and run kmhtconvert. You said you could do
it manually, so why not automate it and then it will be point and click.

We can help you with that if you need.

Well mainly because I am extremely weak at *nix shell scripts (Now, if it was
DCL on OpenVMS - I'm your man!)

The process I have used is
1. Open the email item
2. extract and save the .mht attachement to the desktop
3. right-click on the <whatever>.mht file and choose open with , then choose
kmhtconvert
4. A new directory is created on the desktop, I open it and it holds an
index.html file -- which is what I need

It seems a bit complicated to do in a script...

I was in a hurry when I posted the link.

So I followed the link, and on second look, I realized unmht
was a windows program.

Now back home, on my third look, a couple of minutes ago, I realized
unmht isn't a windows program, but a firefox extension,
and it installs fine on this gnu/linux box. I don't have
any .mht files, so I can't say if it works.

I installed it succesfully on FF (using Jaunty, fully updated) and restarted FF.
When I clicked on a .mht file and chose 'open with firefox' a new tab opened in
the browser, -- all blank, and nothing movved for about 10 minutes, at which
stage I gave up. If I can get hold of a spare windows PC I'll try to use it there.

(Also, I emailed the person who originated the .mht files and requested he send
.doc or text files ... here's hoping!)

They are a legitimate standard, allowing you to save webpages as a

Opera:

I then check File on SeaMonkey & Fx and find an new option on both:

How to open .mht files in Firefox on Linux
Contrary to popular belief, .mht files are not a Microsoft conspiracy.
They are a legitimate standard, allowing you to save webpages as a
single file rather ...

'Save as MHT'. Gee, who would have thunk...
The difference is probably that using Jaunty, Firefox is stuck at version 3.0. I
have installed unmht several times from several sources to no avail, The best
result I could get was FF opening a new blank tab, and the pointer showing a
spinning wheel for a good few (at lease 10) minutes -- no visible result.

Possibly (not sure) after Karmic comes out, Firefox will be at 3.5. If so I will
try unmht again, or bite the bullet and install Opera. Meanwhile I have slightly
improved my use of kmhtconvert by selecting /tmp as the directory to unpack the
.mht file, and marking the 'vuew immediatly' box, whoch pops up a FF tab.

Please believe me -- I did Google, found more than one firefox plugin and tried
them all. I also searched for a Thunderbird plugin with no luck. I apologize for
using FF and TB, but as an old dog, new tricks bother me.

I find: http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/mht-linux-firefox.html

<file://localhost/home/<username>/tempdir/G/How%20to%20open%20.mht%20files%20in%20Firefox%20on%20Linux.mht>
I then check File on SeaMonkey & Fx and find an new option on
both: 'Save as MHT'. Gee, who would have thunk...

I run only mozilla direct (Firefox, SeaMonkey, Thunderbird). However to
install the Ubuntu version of Firefox 3.5.x, simply:

$ sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5

Or install via Synaptic.

Installing Opera is quite painless:

.mht files are created by some accountancy programs (over which I have no
control) and consist of some kind of encoded html
Firefox has plugins to _create_ .mht files, but not to read them (as far as I
have found)

"UnMHT allows you to view MHT (MHTML) web archive format files, and save
complete web pages, including text and graphics, into a single MHT file."

I've used it to load MHT files into firefox. It works fine. Why would an
add-on save to MHT format, but not be able to read it back?

Other than transferring such a file to a wintel (spit, cough) machine where it
can be read by IE does anyone have a pointer to a Ubuntu application that will
do the job?
Opera (web browser) now can create and read .mht files.
