I installed Lubuntu on an Asus E200H.

Seems to work, but I have no sound and just a dummy device. Any idea how I can
get sound?

Go to the software and update applet and enable installing third party
software.

This does not look exactly like the screen here, but it is already enabled and
doesn't make any difference.

The fix for this may depend on your kernel version.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1563110

"The sound card in this laptop is the Intel sst cherry trail,
the codec is the cx2072x"

The hardware buses don't work exactly the same as a
conventional computer, which is why the codec needs
to be added in a specific branch of the kernel. The
declaration of "SST" seems to have something to
do with this. Maybe SST feeds HDAudio high speed
serial interface to the Conexant codec or something ?

The processor could be a SOC (System On a Chip), rather
than being a CPU + Northbridge + Southbridge, like
on a desktop computer. That's why this happens.
Best guess.

Kernel is 5.0.0-27-generic.

I didn't find anything yet. Seems to be complicated, is it?

But I wonder why this needs a fix, seems to be known since 2016. But it is also
an issue with OpenSUSE.

So far I understand this will be included in Kernel 5.3 which will be releast
the next month.

All I have to figure out is how to update the kernel then.

I believe that Lubuntu has Synaptic which should be able
even on Lubuntu to do kernel updates when they are finally provided.
Most likely your regular updates on Lubuntu may include forced kernel
updates. That is after all, a Ubuntu feature.

Which command is needed to upgrade Lubuntu to 5.3?

Try running "uname -a" in a terminal and report your result

I use Synaptic quite often but if your system is Ubuntu based
all bets are off because they use at Canonical forced updates as
inherited from Debian.

??? Although it offers automatic updates through cron-apt (sp?), it
neither ships nor recommends it and Debian has no /forced/ updates nor
method of forcing them to my knowledge. I've run it for quite a while
now, off and on since Potato.

Do you have a citation for Debian forced updates? I'm betting that is
Ubuntu all the way.

Meh, just his ethics. His OS has been really good for the most part
and his business sense is not that bad for multiple values and
definitions of bad.

Forced updates, OTOH, make no sense /especially/ for Mark and friends
as there is no moola in it for them. The whole problem for them
(Canonandonical) is that they didn't cash in on the cow in the
beginning. That original promise of free forever has only hurt them.

It is good to see that they have come on in the server and cloud
markets (didn't they once offer hardware in an orange box? Is that
still around?).

Everyone has to eat. ;-}

What the Wildman said, plus the fact that you run neither Debian nor

commendable.

Don't bet on it. I was 100% on board until that last statement.

Anyway, in addition to cron-apt, Debian and Ubuntu also have the
unattended-upgrades package. Neither are forcing upgrades, but yes, made
to make package upgrades automagical, primarily security patches only in
the case of unattended-upgrades.

No, I still have the same version I had last time.
But if i can update to a newer kernel now, that should bring the sound, will it?
So all I'll have to do is "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" if I'm right.
This will give you the latest packages and -may- include a kernel upgrade.

By the way, the apt commands have been made shorter and 'sudo apt
full-upgrade' is the newer version.

As a (Kubuntu) user since the very beginning I can state there are no
forced updates from Canonical/Ubuntu/Kubuntu/etc.

Personally I use the option to get notified of available updates and
execute them when it suits me.

Your file above, hints that you have digital audio
over the HDMI output cable (video plus audio). As
well, you have a Conexant chip with class D power amp,
for analog audio.

This might be what the HDMI portion looks like.

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=c854b50427e3233e63abc8eb2b1d938495cec024

Whereas this is the selection you want: conexant cx2072x

It's fed by a serial bus, that is not HDAudio. So something
has to enable I2S operation, so the serial portion feeding
the chip will work. The I2S feeds the DAC. The I2C is for control
(at a guess).

https://github.com/conexant/codec_drivers/wiki/CX2X72x-Porting-Guide

You would have to make sure the Conexant is selected, to use it.

Even Windows 10 users had trouble with that hardware, when Windows 10
switched from the Windows 8 driver to the Windows 10 native driver for it.
Their sound stopped.

I don't think I can fix that from here. I'd probably
have to be sitting in front of it for two days, to
make sense of it.

Thank you for your help.

Following script helped:
https://gist.github.com/heikomat/3fe272431b44b580c933bfb901a92257

After running that script, I had to set the soundcard in Pavucontrol-QT.
Then it worked.
After a restart and a strange noise it didn't work anymore. Then I started
"pavucontrol" (without QT) and set the correct soundcard there too.
Not it seems to work after restarts too.

I installed pavucontrol because some sources told me to do so. However I don't
know if it really was part of the solution or rather part of the conflict after
the restart, since Lubunty by default campe with pavucontrol-qt instead of
pavucontrol.

However, not it seems to work. Also that screept downloaded Kernel 5.2.0+ while
"uname -r" still showas that the system is using 5.3.x.
So I hope this will be stable - for now it looks fine.
