I'm trying to put ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso onto a FLASH stick
from Fedora 13. Livecd-iso-to-disk doesn't recognize the Ubuntu iso as a
live image,

livecd-iso-to-disk ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso /dev/sdj1
Verifying image...
/home/backup/isos/ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso: Could not get pvd data
Unable to read the disc checksum from the primary volume descriptor.
This probably means the disc was created without adding the checksum. Are you SURE you want to continue?
Press Enter to continue or ctrl-c to abort

ERROR: /home/backup/isos/ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso does not appear to be a Live image or DVD installer.
Cleaning up to exit...

How do I get the Ubuntu image onto a USB FLASH stick from Fedora? I don't
have any native Ubuntu systems and the machine that I'm targeting for the
Ubuntu install is a nettop that doesn't have a CD reader so I need to do this
from a USB FLASH stick.

UNetbootin:

Might be in the Fedora repos.

It's also in the Ubuntu repos. Universe, to be more exact.

Excuse the noise. I finally read that Op has no Ubu systems.

However it works fine on Fedora.

It has a restriction that livecd-iso-to-disk doesn't have, or perhaps
this is a difference between Fedora Live and Ubuntu Live. When I put
Fedora Live onto a USB stick using livecd-iso-to-disk, I format the
partition on the stick to EXT3, that didn't work when I put Ubuntu on it
using unetbootin. I had to format the partition to FAT32, when I tried to
boot Ubuntu when the stick was EXT3 it didn't work. The other difference
between the tools is that livecd-iso-to-disk requires that the FLASH
drive be unmounted, unetbootin requires that it be mounted. Also livecd-
iso-to-disk overwrites the FLASH partition so it doesn't matter if you
already have something on it. Unetbootin doesn't overwrite the existing
contents so you have to erase everything yourself when you use that tool.

Have you tried liveusb-creator? Format the USB stick as FAT32 first.

I would use Universal Extractor to extractor the Files from the
ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso.
then Copy all the Files from the ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-amd64 Folder to
the USB...
Just the Files in the Folder .... not the Folder and all the Files that in
it or will not BOOT...
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Compression-tools/Universal-Extractor.shtml

Are you can try this Softwore @
http://iso2usb.sourceforge.net/
for it’s a beta

The easy way out is to *buy* a USB DVD/CD player and call it a day. Well
worth the money if you're messing with Linux on netbooks. Or boot into
Ubuntu live on another system that has a DVD/CD and use the Startup Disc
Creator in Ubuntu, which works like a charm. Then you can boot to the
USB and install.

Plus with the external DVD/CD you can boot to Puppy, disconnect the
player and run a Ramdisk session. Awesome.
